Pub Crawl

Pub Crawl: Matter Press

Matter PressI first heard about Randall Brown about a year ago through his fantastic essay in "The Rose Metal Press Field Guide to Writing Flash Fiction," a dynamite craft book filled with essays, writing prompts and fantastic advice.

Pub Crawl: McSweeney's Internet Tendency

McSwThe March weather has been bleak in Seattle of late. So I think it is a perfect time to feature an interview with a web journal that has to be one of the most consistently humorous destinations on the web: McSweeney’s Internet Tendency. Just take a meander through the archives and you’ll see.

Pub Crawl: Bellevue Literary Review

It seems like every other sitcom these days is some rendition of a hospital drama, and let’s be honest, most of it is pretty canned. So I’m thankful for Bellevue Literary Review, a journal that features writers with fresh and meaningful takes on what goes in the lives of those suffering through illness, as well as those whose job it is to treat it.

Pub Crawl: Freight Stories

Freight StoriesI’m a student/tutor/writer, and my wife is a nurse practitioner, and we get along famously. But we’re both pretty competitive—not at all without ego—and at times we have mused about what types of conflict would occur if we both worked in the same field, even on the same team. I imagine that it would be both difficult and rewarding, and for this reason I marvel at couples who are able to engage in the creative arts together.

MB IssueFor this Pub Crawl post, we’re featuring Monkeybicycle, a literary journal with Seattle roots that last year Paul Constant of The Stranger dubbed “better than the rest of the litmags." They recently published one of my short stories (fist pump), which means my intere

Pub Crawl: Rattle

rattleIf you are a looking for a poetry journal that takes seriously its spirit of egalitarianism, then Rattle is for you. So what if you’re not Kay Ryan or Billy Collins—a fair shake is what you will get, and for those of us who feel like anchovies in an enormous ocean full of grey whales, all competing for an ever-shrinking population of krill, that’s something.

Pub Crawl: The Normal School

NSThose of you who attended the 2008–2009 Hugo Literary Series probably remember the wonderful piece done by Aimee Bender involving public sex, written under the Road Trip theme of that evening’s event.

Pub Crawl: Crab Creek Review

CCRCrab Creek Review has been publishing fine poetry and prose for over twenty-five years right in our backyard. But the locally run journal is far from provincial. Along with the work of Richard Hugo House regulars like David Wagoner and Kate Lebo, the current issue includes translations from international poets as well as work from all over the states.

Pub Crawl: elimae

otIn 1996, elimae, which stands for "electronic literary magazine," was founded. Since then, what previously occupied the realm of science fiction has become much more the norm. It has always been true that very, very few independent literary journals—much less online ones—can claim to have been around nearly fifteen years. But elimae has done it, and continues to do it.

Pub Crawl: Hobart

HAnyone who has donned a plastic apron and gloves and spent time in the back room of an establishment that serves food has a love/hate relationship with the name Hobart. You love the steam that washes into your face when it's done and you've lifted up the panels of the dishwasher. You hate how the forks always get stuck in the bottom, and you have to swim your hand around the murky water to find them.
