Thursday, September 15, 7:30 p.m. The Local Celebrity Spelling Bee is an evening of spelling (and misspelling!), fundraising and celebrating Hugo House, featuring local muckety-mucks in the arts and entertainment as well as students, teachers and members of the Hugo House community.
The spelling bee will work like all those ones in grade school with a slight twist. When a contestant gets the word correct, they get to move on... and when they make a mistake, they’ll rely on the generous audience to buy them opportunities to cheat! It’s dastardly (“das-terd-lee”), yes--but all proceeds raised at the event will support Hugo House’s classes, events and resources for Pacific Northwest writers.
Featuring Stranger books editor Paul Constant, author and forager Langdon Cook, John Roderick of The Long Winters, author Stacey Levine, poet and Hugo House founder Frances McCue, DJ Riz Rollins from KEXP, Jerry Holkins of Penny Arcade, David Schmader of The Stranger and more!
Tickets are $25-50 and are available online here or by calling (206) 322-7030.

Classes Advanced Poetry Workshop Following the principle that “Art is the accidental byproduct of the restless and curious mind,” (Noah Purifoy) this workshop is for writers who are committed to reading and writing poetry, although that “commitment” may take a variety of forms. Participants will write new poems following difficult and encouraging limitations, encouragingly limited difficulties and limitedly-difficult encouragement. Fun! But deadly serious. We will talk very deeply about the relation of form to content (inseparable) and the freedom of the poet. Instructor: Ed Skoog Meets: Tuesdays, October 4 - November 8, 7-9 p.m. General: $230 Member: $207
Writing Your Memoir Your memoir is not an autobiography, which would be the story of your life; it is a story from your life. We will discuss the importance of theme and how that shapes and provides a backbone to your memoir as well as explore scenes versus summaries, character development, the art of using judgment, forms of memoir, how to weave musings along with plot to keep the story going and that sticky thing called truth. Students will leave with a solid outline for their memoir. Instructor: Corbin Lewars Meets: Wednesdays, October 5 - November 9, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. General: $230 Member: $207
Novel Writing This course is designed to address the specific concerns of novelists in a workshop setting. Each student should be prepared to submit the first twenty pages of a novel-in-progress for critique. From this six-week workshop you can expect to come away with a hard outline for your story as well as a store of ideas—generated by your peers and instructor—toward moving forward with your novel or writing a new revision. Instructor: Jeff Bender Meets: Wednesdays, October 5 - November 9, 7-9 p.m. General: $230 Member: $207
To register, call (206) 322-7030, or view the entire fall course catalog and register online here.
Post-it Note Project September 8-October 14 with an opening night party 5-8 p.m. Each night before she goes to bed, artist Clare Johnson draws a picture on a post-it note. Using a combination of images and writing, each drawing depicts something she’s thinking about that evening—a moment from the day, a feeling or thought running through her head as the end of that day approaches. Post-its, usually used for remembering household tasks, work deadlines or lists, instead serve as a visual record of Johnson’s life, acknowledging both the urgency and the ordinariness of her desire to hold on to passing moments.
The exhibit runs September 8-October 14 with an opening night party 5-8 p.m. in conjunction with the Blitz Art Walk, featuring the artist, drink specials and an interactive post-it-making station.
