Write Out
Because writing doesn’t always have to be lonely
Write Out is a happy hour for writers to do what we do most—or should do more of: write.
Each Write Out features a writing prompt offered by a local author, who will also be on hand writing, a grab-bag of writing prompts, and exercises and a small library of books on writing to inspire you. And to further inspire you, happy hour specials are available at the bar.
There are no rules for Write Out—just come any time between 6 and 8 p.m. and write. We’ll provide pens and paper, but if you have a lucky pen or a favorite journal, bring it. Laptops are fine, too. We’ll have power strips available should you need to power up. Light conversation is acceptable, but Write Out is about writing. Bring something you're working on or start something fresh—just be ready to write!
Write Out Schedule
Tuesday, Sept. 27, 6-8 p.m. with novelist Rebecca Agiewich and poet Elizabeth Austen
Tuesday, Oct. 25, 6-8 p.m. with Stranger writer Cienna Madrid and poet Evan Peterson
About the Writers
Rebecca Agiewich is the author of “BreakupBabe: A Novel,” published by Ballantine Books in May 2006 (and a finalist for the 2007 Lulu Blooker Prize, a literary prize devoted to “blooks”). It was inspired by her dating blog, also called “Breakup Babe,” which earned her a devoted audience and scared off many potential boyfriends. She firmly believes that the interactive nature of blogging is a boon for aspiring writers.
Elizabeth Austen is the author of "Every Dress a Decision" (Blue Begonia Press, 2011), "The Girl Who Goes Alone" (Floating Bridge Press, 2010) and "Where Currents Meet" (one of four winners of the 2010 Toadlily Press chapbook award and part of the quartet Sightline). Her poems have been featured on Garrison Keillor’s The Writer’s Almanac and Verse Daily. She was the Washington state “roadshow poet” and is the literary producer for KUOW 94.9 public radio. She’s an alumna of Hedgebrook and Antioch University Los Angeles, and was part of the 2009 Hugo House Literary Series.
Cienna Madrid—Stranger news writer—has been a writer-in-residence for Richard Hugo House. During her residency, she taught fiction classes and wrote 4/5 of a book about a death-row psychotic who pens children’s morality tales. She’s organized, hosted and read at various reading cities around the city. Cienna grew up in scenic, potatoey Idaho and has lived and written in Seattle for a decade.
Evan J. Peterson holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the Florida State University. He teaches for several local community colleges and has led writing workshops for Richard Hugo House, the Smudgy Notebook series at Gay City Health Project and Babeland. He is the author of the poetry zines "The Ecstatic Tarot," "Secular Exorcisms," "New Mythology," "Starve A Fever" and "Viscera," and the editor of the Zine Archive Publishing Project's new zine review zine. Evan publishes poetry, fiction, nonfiction, book reviews and interviews. He is a book reviewer for TheRumpus.net and served as judge for the 2011 Eudaimonia Poetry Review chapbook contest. Recent and forthcoming writing may be found in Weird Tales, Ganymede Unfinished, Court Green, Lo-Ball and Aim For The Head: A Zombie Poetry Anthology.
