2012 Washington State Book Awards Party

A party to celebrate the winners and finalists of the Washington State Book Awards will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 3.

This event is open to the public and free of charge. Light refreshments will be served.

The celebration is sponsored by The Seattle Public Library Foundation and Richard Hugo House.

This is the 45th year of the program, formerly called the Governor’s Writers Awards. A book award is given based on the strength of the publication’s literary merit, lasting importance and overall quality.

The 2012 Washington State Book Award winners are:

Fiction:

  • “A Young Man’s Guide to Late Capitalism” by Peter Mountford, of Ballard in Seattle (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt)

Poetry:

  • “Woodnote” by Christine Deavel, of Wallingford in Seattle (Bear Star Press)

Biography/Memoir:

  • “In Earshot of Water: Notes from the Columbia Plateau” by Paul Lindholdt, of Spokane (The University of Iowa Press)

History/General Nonfiction:

  • “In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin” by Erik Larson, of Capitol Hill in Seattle (Crown Publishers)

Picture Book:

  • “To Market, To Market,” written and illustrated by Nikki McClure, of Olympia (Abrams Books for Young Readers)

 Middle Grades and Young Adults (10- to 18-year-old readers):

  • “Something to Hold” by Katherine Schlick Noe, of Queen Anne in Seattle (Clarion Books)
