DESCRIPTION:Jack Straw writing fellows Natalie Pascale Boisseau\, Kevin Dean\, Elissa Favero\, BeeLyn Naihiwet\, Diane Nguyen\, and Ruth Marie Tomlinso read some of the poetry and creative non-fiction they’ve been working on this year. \nJack Straw Cultural Center’s Writers Program was founded in 1997 to introduce writers to the medium of recorded audio; to develop their presentation skills for both live and recorded readings; to encourage the creation of new literary work; to present the writers and their work to the public; and to build community among writers. \nParticipating writers are presented in live readings\, in the printed Jack Straw Writers Anthology; and on the web and radio. Writers receive training in vocal presentation\, performance\, and microphone technique to prepare them for public readings\, interviews\, and studio recording. Their recorded readings and interviews with the curator are then used to produce programs for SoundPages\, our literary podcast\, and for selected radio broadcast. \n \nFree admission to this event is made possible with support from 4Culture.

This open\, unstructured space is intended to create opportunities for folks to build community and enjoy some quality time writing their own works-in-progress!  \nOpen mic begins at 7 pm PT. \n– Reading is open to all! \n– You don’t have to read. DESCRIPTION:DUNE* Mini-Comics Night is where folks are invited to create the contents of a black and white\, 5.5” x 8.5” printed anthology within a limited amount of time\, in one evening with no prompts or themes. Create whatever you want but it must be physical and finished by the end of the night. \nAn exclusive edition of the book will be published and distributed to only the contributors at the following DUNE meet-up. \n \nThis is a night of communal productivity and creation with a deadline\, not just drinking and drawing. It is also meant to be a challenge to one’s abilities to create a finished piece of self-satisfied work within the limitations. Bring the art supplies and paper that you are most comfortable working with and join dozens of illustrators and cartoonists on the 4th Tuesday of each month from 5pm – 9pm. Space fills up quickly so be on time or you may have to wait for space to create. \n \nAs always\, this is a community funded project and we’ll ask for donations of $5 per submission for printing/publishing and renting the space at the historic Hugo House.
