An award-winning author and writing mentor, Darien Hsu Gee has worked with writers for over 25 years, helping them get their work into the world.
She is the author of five novels published by Penguin Random House that have been translated into eleven languages. Her collection of micro essays, Allegiance, received the Bronze IPPY award (Essays) in 2021. In 2019, she received a Poetry Society of America Chapbook Fellowship award for her collection of matrilineal prose poems, Other Small Histories, chosen by Patricia Smith. Her nonfiction how-to book, Writing the Hawai‘i Memoir, won the Hawai‘i Book Publishers’ Ka Palapala Poʻokela Award of Excellence in 2015.
Darien is the recipient of a Sustainable Arts Foundation grant and a Vermont Studio Center fellowship; she holds an MFA from the Rainier Writing Workshop. A full-time working writer, Darien serves as co-founder and series editor for Haliʻa Aloha, a micro memoir writing and hybrid publishing program. She has served on the boards of the Friends and Foundation of the San Francisco Public Library and the literary journal, ZYZZYVA. In 2021, she sold a food blog, Friendship Bread Kitchen, which emerged from one of her novels.
