SUMMARY:Industry Talks: Here for a Good Time\, Not a Long Time: Running a pop-up bookstore
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Hugo House’s Lapis Theater for Industry Talks: Careers in the Literary Arts\, an engaging evening that explores the many professional paths within the world of writing\, publishing\, and literary production. \nThis event brings together authors\, editors\, publishers\, literary agents\, and other industry professionals for insightful conversations about their work and the evolving landscape of the literary arts. Attendees will gain exposure to the diverse opportunities available across the field—whether in creative writing\, editing\, marketing\, or event programming and learn how different roles contribute to the broader literary ecosystem. \nThe evening will feature a moderated discussion\, followed by an open Q&A session and networking opportunities\, offering a welcoming space for writers\, readers\, and anyone passionate about storytelling to connect and exchange ideas. \nWho Should Attend: \nMembers of the public interested in literature\, writing\, publishing\, and creative careers. \nEvent Schedule: \n·     6:30 PM: Hugo House Intro \n·     6:35 PM: Industry Professional Intro \n·     6:40-7:40 PM: Lecture \n·     7:45 PM: Q&A from the audience \n·     8:00 PM-8:30 PM: Meet and Greet/Networking \n \nThis event will be a behind-the-scenes talk on building and running a temporary (pop-up) bookstore. This presentation covers creating a clear focus to drive reader interest and curate a collection rather than cast a wide (and expensive) net. Because temporary means less time to earn back an investment\, this talk will cover frugality\, conservative buying strategies\, and strict financial management. And because frugality means being an owner-operator\, we will discuss the less glamorous parts of bookselling and store ownership\, including physical labor\, long hours\, and lots of standing. Finally\, we will discuss holding events and working with local authors without creating financial stressors\, as ways to drive foot traffic and support the community. \n \nReduced admission to this event is made possible with support from 4Culture.
