SUMMARY:Adventures with Your Inner Artist with Samar Abulhassan
DESCRIPTION:Ready to shake off perfectionism and fall back in love with making things?  \nThis monthly creative writing circle for adults is your invitation to play. Each session\, we’ll push past what we think writing should be and plunge into the strange\, the chaotic\, and the ephemeral to discover what it can be. In this safe\, vibrant space\, we’ll explore a myriad of creative writing prompts that incorporate music\, divination\, ritual\, movement\, visual art\, and more to keep the creative channel open and receptive to surprise. Genre blending and hybrid forms are welcome and encouraged!  \nMost of all\, we’ll give ourselves—and each other—permission to create without expectation.   \nEach session features new prompts and approaches. Leave with new work\, fresh energy\, and a renewed sense of joy and pleasure in creating. Writers of all levels are welcome.   \nAbout Write with Hugo House \nWrite with Hugo House is a free drop-in writing circle for adults of all ages and genres of writing. Bring something you’re working on\, or just come ready to write. You will have the opportunity to share your work and get feedback—but only if you want to (no pressure). You can also use this time to increase productivity on your current work in progress\, surrounded by fellow writers.

SUMMARY:Collections—A Live Magazine and Public Club
DESCRIPTION:Collections—A Live Magazine and Public Club hosted by Ariel Basom is a monthly showcase of both live readers and video performances featuring a diversity of positions\, styles\, and modes: poetry juxtaposing story; literary fiction opposing memoir; drama next to genre fiction. \nDo you want to be a part of this community? Do you want to be a reader? Show up to the event; introduce yourself; we are welcoming to all writers and hold space for new members of our public club. \nWe create an environment we can be proud of by treating ourselves and each other with high regard by leading with kindness and by wearing our favorite fancy clothes. We are not casually stumbling in but rather we show up as our best selves in order to present our best work. \nVisit arielbasom.com/collections for monthly line-ups\, more details\, and archives of past collections. \nFree admission to this event is made possible with support from 4Culture.

SUMMARY:Write with Hugo House with Jeanine Walker
DESCRIPTION:In this beginner-friendly writing class\, we’ll focus on generative writing through poetry prompts. The session will begin with introductions and a short warm-up\, after which we’ll read two separate poems and write in response. At times\, you'll have the opportunity to share words and ideas with other writers in small groups. You'll leave with 2-3 new drafts of poems. Designed for all writers\, this group supports poets as well those working in other genres\, as the skills practiced in poetry can be thought of as “cross-training” for memoir and fiction\, too. \nAbout Write with Hugo House \nWrite with Hugo House is a free drop-in writing circle for adults of all ages and genres of writing. Bring something you’re working on\, or just come ready to write. You will have the opportunity to share your work and get feedback—but only if you want to (no pressure). SUMMARY:From Page to Voice: Jack Straw Writers Reading
DESCRIPTION:Jack Straw writing fellows Natalie Pascale Boisseau\, Kevin Dean\, Elissa Favero\, BeeLyn Naihiwet\, Diane Nguyen\, and Ruth Marie Tomlinso read some of the poetry and creative non-fiction they’ve been working on this year. \nJack Straw Cultural Center’s Writers Program was founded in 1997 to introduce writers to the medium of recorded audio; to develop their presentation skills for both live and recorded readings; to encourage the creation of new literary work; to present the writers and their work to the public; and to build community among writers. \nParticipating writers are presented in live readings\, in the printed Jack Straw Writers Anthology; and on the web and radio. Writers receive training in vocal presentation\, performance\, and microphone technique to prepare them for public readings\, interviews\, and studio recording. Their recorded readings and interviews with the curator are then used to produce programs for SoundPages\, our literary podcast\, and for selected radio broadcast. \n \nFree admission to this event is made possible with support from 4Culture.

SUMMARY:Great Minds 2026
DESCRIPTION:Great Minds 2026 \nJoin us on Thursday\, September 17 for our annual Great Minds event exploring Optimism\, Speculative Futures\, and the Worlds We Dream Into Being. This is an evening about the futures we can still choose: worlds where communities thrive through cooperation\, where technology supports rather than replaces a deeper human connection\, and where hope is treated as a serious creative act. Expect a conversation  \nthat moves from reckoning to hope while celebrating the diverse voices of women writers\, whose perspectives keep expanding our shared vision for the future. Readers and writers alike are invited to imagine together the future we still have the power to write.  \n \nThis unforgettable evening of conversation and performance features:  \nKira Jane Buxton\, Hedgebrook alumna and author of Tartufo (2025)\, about a dying Tuscan village whose residents discover a massive\, highly valuable white truffle that brings both hope and chaotic upheaval. Buxton first called herself a writer inside a Hedgebrook farmhouse. \n \nKathleen Alcalá\, Hedgebrook alumna and author of Spirits of the Ordinary (1998)\, a novel that threads magical realism through nineteenth-century Mexico. She's a contributing writer to New Suns: Original Speculative Fiction by People of Color (2020) and a Clarion West graduate. \n \nRashida J. Smith\, author of the Grace Bloods series and the Tooth & Spell books\, written under the pen name Jasmine Silvera. She's Clarion West's Program Director\, a Clarion West graduate herself\, and will moderate the conversation. \n \nSirjana Kaur\, the 2026/2027 SAL Youth Poet Laureate\, who is using language to explore memory\, girlhood\, identity\, and faith. Bushwick Book Club Seattle singer-songwriters to entertain us with original works inspired by our author’s works. \n \nWe'll close with an audience Q&A and wrap with a reception featuring light-bites and apple cider from our retreat center on Whidbey Island. Attendees will leave with a curated reading list to keep the conversation going long after the night ends. A huge thanks to our partners at Clarion West\, the celebrated speculative fiction organization\, as well as Seattle Arts and Lectures\, Bushwick Book Club\, and Hugo House. \n \nGet tickets here!

SUMMARY:DUNE Mini-Comics Night
DESCRIPTION:DUNE* Mini-Comics Night is where folks are invited to create the contents of a black and white\, 5.5” x 8.5” printed anthology within a limited amount of time\, in one evening with no prompts or themes. Create whatever you want but it must be physical and finished by the end of the night. \nAn exclusive edition of the book will be published and distributed to only the contributors at the following DUNE meet-up. \n \nThis is a night of communal productivity and creation with a deadline\, not just drinking and drawing. It is also meant to be a challenge to one’s abilities to create a finished piece of self-satisfied work within the limitations. Bring the art supplies and paper that you are most comfortable working with and join dozens of illustrators and cartoonists on the 4th Tuesday of each month from 5pm – 9pm. Space fills up quickly so be on time or you may have to wait for space to create. \n \nAs always\, this is a community funded project and we’ll ask for donations of $5 per submission for printing/publishing and renting the space at the historic Hugo House. Please do our hosts a favor and order one drink minimum from the Book Bar. \n \nAll are welcome! Don’t be a jerk! \n \n*There is no relation to DUNE by Frank Herbert\, but you are welcome to submit DUNE inspired works. \n \n4th Tuesday of Each Month 5-9pm \nHugo House \n1634 11th Ave\, Seattle\, WA 98122 \n \nFree admission to this event is made possible with support from 4Culture.
