SUMMARY:Write with Hugo House with Jeanine Walker
DESCRIPTION:In this beginner-friendly writing class\, we’ll focus on generative writing through poetry prompts. The session will begin with introductions and a short warm-up\, after which we’ll read two separate poems and write in response. At times\, you'll have the opportunity to share words and ideas with other writers in small groups. You'll leave with 2-3 new drafts of poems. Designed for all writers\, this group supports poets as well those working in other genres\, as the skills practiced in poetry can be thought of as “cross-training” for memoir and fiction\, too. \nAbout Write with Hugo House \nWrite with Hugo House is a free drop-in writing circle for adults of all ages and genres of writing. Bring something you’re working on\, or just come ready to write. You will have the opportunity to share your work and get feedback—but only if you want to (no pressure). You can also use this time to increase productivity on your current work in progress\, surrounded by fellow writers.

SUMMARY:DUNE Mini-Comics Night
DESCRIPTION:DUNE* Mini-Comics Night is where folks are invited to create the contents of a black and white\, 5.5” x 8.5” printed anthology within a limited amount of time\, in one evening with no prompts or themes. Create whatever you want but it must be physical and finished by the end of the night. \nAn exclusive edition of the book will be published and distributed to only the contributors at the following DUNE meet-up. \n \nThis is a night of communal productivity and creation with a deadline\, not just drinking and drawing. It is also meant to be a challenge to one’s abilities to create a finished piece of self-satisfied work within the limitations. Bring the art supplies and paper that you are most comfortable working with and join dozens of illustrators and cartoonists on the 4th Tuesday of each month from 5pm – 9pm. Space fills up quickly so be on time or you may have to wait for space to create. \n \nAs always\, this is a community funded project and we’ll ask for donations of $5 per submission for printing/publishing and renting the space at the historic Hugo House. Please do our hosts a favor and order one drink minimum from the Book Bar. \n \nAll are welcome! Don’t be a jerk! \n \n*There is no relation to DUNE by Frank Herbert\, but you are welcome to submit DUNE inspired works. \n \n4th Tuesday of Each Month 5-9pm \nHugo House \n1634 11th Ave\, Seattle\, WA 98122 \n \nFree admission to this event is made possible with support from 4Culture.

SUMMARY:KAIDAN: Japanese Ghost Stories
DESCRIPTION:After a sold-out run in August\, KAIDAN returns\, featuring new stories and performers! \n \nWHO: Za Trans-Pacific Productions \nWHAT: KAIDAN Returns \nDirected by Mimi Katano \n \nShow Description: \nZa Trans-Pacific Productions’s KAIDAN returns\, featuring new stories and performers\, after a sold-out run in August. Kaidan(怪談) are traditional Japanese stories of ghosts (yūrei) and supernatural beings (yokai). \n \nJoin us for these frightening yet melancholy stories of the unseen world that reflect the culture and history of Japan. For the October showing\, KAIDAN will be restaged with additional production elements. New stories include “Yuki Onna\,” “Riki-Baka” and “Yanari”. These legendary Japanese stories\, selected from Lafcadio Hearn's KWAIDAN\,Hyaku Monogatari Kaidan (One Hundred Ghost Stories)\, and Kido Okamoto’s Kaidan series\, are over 300 years old. KAIDAN is presented as a fusion of traditional Japanese story telling with American physical theatre. This show includes descriptions of violence\, death and suicide. It is recommended for ages 13 and up. \n \nCultural background: KAIDAN is the origin of J-Horror \nKaidan has its origin in Japan’s Heian Period (794-1185 CE)\, where people believed that the spirits of high-ranking nobility killed in political battles came back to haunt those who defeated them. Thus\, Kaidan were believed to be a collection of “eerie happenings\,” and were not fictional. It is a deeply rooted cultural tradition to believe in the presence of ghosts and inhuman creatures. \n \nBut the Edo period (1603-1868) was when Kaidan took off as a form of entertainment\, regardless of class or status. During this time\, the style of Hyaku Monogatari Kaidan (One Hundred Ghost Stories) became popular. One hundred candles were lit at dusk and the story teller blew out one candle at the end of each story until all were extinguished. When the final candle was out\, people could expect to feel the presence of a ghost. This form was particularly popular amongst Samurai\, as a way to test their bravery. During the Meiji period (1868-1912)\, Kaidan became known globally thanks to a westerner named Lafcadio Hearn\, a Greek born Irish immigrant who married a Japanese woman and became a Japanese citizen under the name Yakumo Koizumi. Hearn’s fascination with Japan’s ghost stories led him to research and retell them in his own way. Some of his versions of Kaidan are also included in this performance. \n \nThe Kaidan tradition continues in Japanese culture through live story telling\, literature\, Kabuki theatre\, visual art\, music\, video games\, manga and horror films. \n \nPerformance schedule\, location\, and tickets: \n\nThursday October 22 at 7:30pm: Seattle Open Arts Place (S.O.A.P.)\, 1406 18th Ave\, Seattle\nFriday October 23 at 7:30pm: Seattle Open Arts Place (S.O.A.P.)\, 1406 18th Ave\, Seattle\nSaturday October 24 at 2:00 pm: Seattle Open Arts Place (S.O.A.P.)\, 1406 18th Ave\, Seattle\nFriday October 30 7:30pm: Hugo House\, 1111 East Olive\, Seattle\n\nPerformer Information: This production features two returning actors\, Nick Mendoza and Misaki Teranishi\, as well as newcomers Nene Kondo and Riko Kishitani. Sumi-e (Japanese ink painting) performer Hiroko Nagatomo is also returning and Asako Tateishi\, Taiko drummer and bamboo flute player\, will join the performance on October 30 at Hugo House. Performer bios can be found at ztpproductions.com. \n \nAbout Za Trans-Pacific Productions: Za Trans-Pacific Productions is a Seattle-based company that promotes Japanese and Japanese-American stories\, playwrights\, and theater artists\, mentors new and developing Japanese and Japanese-American voices in the theater\, and strives to build an artistic community across the Pacific. "Za" is a Japanese word for troupe\, theatre\, seats\, and constellations (also sometimes the way Japanese people pronounce the word "the"). Our mission is to be the bridge between Japan and the U.S. through theatre\, and to broaden our collective vision as artists and people. \n \nFor more information\, visit ztpproductions.com.
