Epistolary Prose

All Levels | Even in our age of digital communication, the letter holds enormous power for both writer and reader. We will look at prose aimed at a wider audience but crafted as a letter (work by Chris Kraus, Marilynne Robinson, James Baldwin, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and others) and consider the possibilities opened up by this kind of direct address and structure. We’ll also read some actual writerly correspondence, from Emily Dickinson and Kafka to email exchanges. As we investigate these texts, we’ll be writing our own epistolary stories or essays and serving as one another’s reader-recipients through workshop.
