All Levels | How to begin a story when you don’t know where to begin? You don’t make a choice, said the writer Paul Bowles—you follow a scent. This class is for writers who crave inspiration, grounding in the elements of fiction, and a fresh approach to generating stories. We’ll write from prompts every class, analyze other writers’ work, and share our experiments, producing an unexpected story start by class’s end. Students may be asked to complete short, nontraditional assignments outside of class.
Alma García's short fiction has been published as award-winning in Narrative Magazine, Passages North, and Boulevard, and is forthcoming in Enizagam and in the anthology Roadside Curiosities: Short Stories on American Pop Culture (University of Leipzig Press/Picador).
