Poems of Location and Dislocation: Leaving and Finding Home

All Levels | Spoken-word poet Warsan Shire writes, “We only leave home when home won’t let us stay.” We will grapple with dominant narratives about who belongs and who is excluded, reading widely from contemporary poets who write about shifting identities, exile, and belonging. We’ll develop a keen eye to craft and content by encountering poets of vastly different ages and ethnicities. Participants will create and revise two poems that address personal and political experiences of displacement and yearning for home.
