Introductory / Intermediate | Opinion-writing is one of the most powerful vehicles for using personal stories to inspire change. In this generative class, we’ll practice mining our experiences in order to craft opinion pieces that humanize our convictions. We’ll draw inspiration from writers like Rebecca Solnit, Kathryn Schulz, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and Dan Savage and from Louise Dunlap’s book, Undoing the Silence, about overcoming barriers that make us reluctant to speak out. Students will develop a draft of an opinion piece, essay, or pitch.
Madeline Ostrander’s work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Sun Magazine, Audubon Magazine, The Nation, Al Jazeera America, and High Country News. She is a full-time freelance science and environmental writer and the former senior editor of YES! Magazine.
