When Irish poet and Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney died this past August, there was an outpouring of sorrow at his passing and a celebration of his work. No journalist or critic worried about finding memorable lines or poems. There are just too many of them. In this class, we’ll immerse ourselves in his work, following threads that bind it together — his upbringing on a farm, his moral grappling with the Irish political conflict, and the music and mastery of his poetry.
Required text: Opened Ground by Seamus Heaney.
Due to COVID-19, all classes will take place online-either through Zoom or through Wet Ink, our asynchronous learning platform-through Winter quarter 2021.
