Aimed at beginners excited about dipping their toes into new waters, this class will examine screenplay format, visual storytelling, dialogue, structure, and how exactly a script serves as a blueprint for the filmmaking process. Throughout the course, students will generate material to be workshopped in the style of a writers’ room, with student work read aloud and critiqued in class.
Due to COVID-19, all classes will take place online-either through Zoom or through Wet Ink, our asynchronous learning platform-through Spring quarter 2021.

Russ Nickel works as a screenwriter in Los Angeles. His first feature film, Bear with Us, is available on Amazon Prime and DVD, and his series, “Stellar People” is slated to be released sometime soon. His short film “The Speed of Time” launched on DUST: Horizons and was featured in Variety. He’s also the head writer for both Arrowhead Studios’ upcoming video game and the ed-tech startup Tappity. Additionally, he teaches screenwriting at Chapman University and Belmont University. When he’s not writing, Russ is probably playing an escape room or some Magic the Gathering. Or drinking coffee. Mmm…coffee. For more, check out @russnickel on Twitter or www.rknickel.com.
