Speculative Short Stories

How do you build an entire speculative world in 8,000 words? How do you balance intricate worldbuilding with the demands of plot and character development? In this class, we will answer these and other craft questions by studying short stories by contemporary masters of the form. Readings will include work by Kelly Link, N. K Jemisin, Ted Chiang, and others. In-class writing exercises will help students apply what they learn to their own work.

Beginning Fall 2021, we will be adding select in-person classes back to our course catalog. The majority of our classes will still be offered via Zoom.

If a class says IN-PERSON in its title, it will take place in person at our permanent home in Seattle.

If a class says ASYNCHRONOUS in its title, it will take place on Wet Ink, our asynchronous learning platform.

If a class does not have a marker after its title, it will take place via Zoom.
