The Necessity and Speed of Metaphors

Essentially, metaphor is a rhetorical device, one that establishes a relationship between two previously unconnected objects, persons, actions, or ideas. It is a fundamental component of the imaginative mind. Through metaphor, we see the world preserved and fully realized around us. Following the Word Works presentation the evening before, this workshop will continue to explore those ideas. We will survey and examine different kinds of figurative language and make an argument for its use in our poems, stories, and essays. Participants will be looking in depth at how metaphors work in specific poems, and participants are welcome to bring in both their own poem and a poem they admire that uses metaphor/simile.

Due to COVID-19, all classes will take place online-either through Zoom or through Wet Ink, our asynchronous learning platform-through Spring quarter 2021.
