You might have seen a recent piece in Crosscut about this legislative snag: The Washington State Legislature has yet to pass the $4 billion capital budget.
Hugo House is recommended for $1.034 million in that budget—a key part of our campaign to build a permanent new space.
Major funding for our new home is tied up in this budget, but the delay doesn’t only impact Hugo House; it hurts the work of countless projects and organizations that benefit from that budget. We are one of many.
Not that such a setback will stop us.
While it’s true that our move-back date has been delayed, construction continues on our new home. We will be moving into our new space across from Cal Anderson Park in mid-2018, and to do that, we’re going to need your help.
We’ve been working hard to set the campaign up for success. As soon as state funding is in place, we will need the contributions of everyone in our community of writers and readers to keep doing what we do best: Support the writing community of Seattle.
As our very own Peter Mountford put it to Crosscut: “There [is] nothing remotely like this in the city…It strengthens the community. It creates awareness around what is happening with local literature.”
We need you to create awareness, too.
Tell your friends, fellow writers, and book lovers how much Hugo House means to you. Explain that Hugo House fosters the vibrancy that makes our city what it is.

Tree Swenson has been the executive director of Hugo House since early 2012. She previously spent ten years as executive director of the Academy of American Poets in New York, and was the executive director and publisher at Copper Canyon Press, which she co-founded, for twenty years. She also served as director of programs at the Massachusetts Cultural Council and is a former board president of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP). She holds an MPA degree from the Kennedy School at Harvard.
