DESCRIPTION:Works in Progress is Hugo House's open mic series inclusive of diverse formats and storytelling crafts. Read your work—poetry\, fiction\, essays\, memoirs\, plays\, music\, comedy\, and more—and connect with our literary community!  \n \nWorks in Progress is a low-pressure\, welcoming environment for readers and guests of all skill levels and literary experience. We especially encourage BIPOC\, LGBTQIA2S+\, and other marginalized voices to take the mic!.   \n \nDoors open at 6 pm PT for interested writers who want to come early\, carve out some sacred writing time\, and share ideas on craft and content. This open\, unstructured space is intended to create opportunities for folks to build community and enjoy some quality time writing their own works-in-progress! Anticipate complimentary donuts and coffee! \n \nOpen mic begins at 7 pm PT. \n– Reading is open to all! \n– You don’t have to read. Guests and audience members are encouraged to attend! \n– Sign-up for reading begins on-site when doors open at 6 pm and continues until the open mic begins at 7 pm. \n– Only one sign-up per person. \n– The order for the 20 reading slots will be randomly assigned. You will be notified prior to the reading of your slot. \n– Each reader has 5 minutes to read. Be mindful of your excerpt length\, and practice beforehand if you can! \n \nThe House bar will be open to serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. \n \nWorks in Progress is sustained through suggested donations from attendees. DESCRIPTION:Experience Italian poet Amelia Rosselli's The Dragonfly (Entre Rios\, 2023) in a new translation by Deborah Woodard and Roberta Antoginni— presented in its entirety by many of Seattle's experimental writers and musicians. Deborah Woodard\, Eli Briskin\, Josh Foman\, Tanya Holtland\, Brian Dang\, Serena Chopra\, Peter Nelson-King\, and Susan Payne O’Brien present this troubled and troubling text in word\, music\, and song— a tribute to Roselli\, who was an accomplished musicologist. \n \nLa Libellula (The Dragonfly) is Amelia Rosselli’s acknowledged first major work and contains all the elements of her mature vision: trilingual wordplay\, musicality\, and political engagement. With its vertiginous propulsion and rotational structure\, this single-long poem\, a canto\, hovers on the edge of the surreal\, where meaning continually multiplies and then negates. The reader must engage her work as she instructs — intuitively. Her inventive refraction of Italian literary tradition sought a more authentic liberation\, “in all the nation’s life\, in all the dismal / boroughs\, in all the putridous world\, exists / just one me\, exists just one you\, — exists charity.” Now recognized as one of the most significant voices of post-war Europe\, her visceral writing challenges the constriction of language as not only a fascist legacy but also as a critique of the banality and materialism of reconstruction.

DESCRIPTION:Write-O-Rama is your chance to try out several workshops offered by Hugo House teachers all in one writing-packed day! Sample Hugo House classes\, meet our teachers\, and try out genres and topics outside your purview without the pressure of registering for a full class. \n \nEvent Overview  \nThis Write-O-Rama will be held virtually on Zoom. Over the course of the day\, you'll take four workshops of your choice\, one per hour of the event. \nThe first class begins at 12 pm. There will be four workshop choices per session\, and each session lasts 50 minutes with a 10 minute break before the next session begins. \nChoose your favorite workshop and head to the virtual room in which it’s held! The instructor will give a brief talk on the topic followed by a writing prompt or exercise. At the 50-minute mark\, you can stay in the room or move to your next class of choice. \n \nAdmission Types \n\n$60: Write-O-Rama registration\, giving you access to four workshops of your choice.\n$100: Write-O-Rama registration\, plus a discounted Hugo House membership\, which is good for one year of early registration\, class and event discounts\, discounts at local bookstores\, and other great benefits.\n\n\n\nWRITE-O-RAMA SCHEDULE: \n \n12-1 pm PT Classes: \n \nThe Poetics of Translation with with Jeanine Walker \nAs many poetic mentors have attested: if you want to write poetry\, translate. Today\, working from the Korean (no prior knowledge of Korean required)\, we’ll translate a few lines and be inspired by our efforts to find new ways to form our own poetic sentences. \n \nLet's Write a Story with Holly Day \nIn this class\, we'll go over some of the basics of how using an outline can help you get started on a story and carry you through until the end. We'll also discuss how basic story structures change drastically depending on who your characters are and especially who the writer is. \n \nBelonging: the Landscape of Home with Christine Hemp \nEspecially in times of upheaval\, we seek refuge in a place of belonging\, past and present. Maybe it’s the country you had to flee; or your childhood playhouse; a nook in your kitchen; or\, after the pandemic\, discovering that your house is no longer your home. In this mini workshop\, we will explore the questions ‘What exactly is home anyway?” and “How do we write about it?” \n \nEat the Apple: Writing Sensual Experiences with Yasmine Ameli \nUsing Imtiaz Dharker’s “How to Cut a Pomegranate” as an opening text\, these interactive guided writing exercises will encourage writers to practice mindful sensual awareness. Writers will eat a fruit of their choosing in real time—while also taking down observational notes on the experience; we will examine the fruit in multiple stages: unopened\, mid preparation\, while eating\, and after consumption. We then will review our observational notes; circle the descriptions\, lines\, and language that excite us the most to continue; and share these discoveries in the chat. \n \n1–2 pm PT Classes: \n \nThe Letter From Home: Jamaica Kincaid's One-Sentence Stories with Noah Zanella \nIn this workshop we will look at one-sentence stories by Jamaica Kincaid and examine how she uses the lyrical run-on sentence to merge flash fiction with prose poetry. We will then write our own one sentence stories in response to Kincaid’s work. \n \nWorld Building with Scott Driscoll \nAll fiction writers engage in world building. The better job you do of it\, the better chance the reader will want to follow your character into that world and cheer for them to resolve the disturbance. This 50-minute course will start with a look at exterior world building. What it is. How it’s done. How realism and fantasy settings compare. We will then explore how character internality and commentary add meaning to those worlds. \n \nUnlock Your Stories with Margot Leitman \nYou have great stories to tell\, you've just become numb to them. In this session we will use best-selling author Margot Leitman's tried and true prompts to unlock the true stories from your life that you've forgotten all about. \n \nAntidote for the Flat Character with with Beth Slattery \nWhether writing about fictional or real individuals\, these "characters" should feel three dimensional to readers. This generative session will be spent writing new characters (and resuscitating old ones) until they are alive and kicking. \n \n2–3 pm PT Classes: \n \nSilent Anatomies: Writing the Body with Christie Valentin-Bati \nAsian-American poet Monica Ong’s hybrid visual poetry book Silent Anatomies combines art\, photography\, and written poetics to discuss topics like immigration\, family dynamics\, and womanhood. Often her work transposes pictures of the body over text. Drawing inspiration from her use of poetry\, prose\, and art\, participants will work with medical diagrams of the body to write their own visual and hybrid poetics. \n \nHow to Kill a Boring Sentence with Ramón Isao \nArguably\, the one rule of writing is to Never Be Boring\, especially at the sentence level. Join Ramón Isao for a fun\, surefire method of injecting life into otherwise listless sentences.  \n \nWhat's Your Memoir REALLY About? with Jennifer Haupt \nPerhaps the trickiest part of structuring a memoir is figuring out the container for your story. What's the driving question? What are the main events and\, just as important\, what doesn't belong in your book? We'll do several generative exercises to begin answering these questions during this workshop. \n \nBeing Bold with Narrative Time with Peter Mountford \nYour stories — true or made up — don't have to be timid with time. In this class we'll look at ways to make big moves in time: stretching\, chopping\, halting\, scattering. Flashbacks\, flash forwards\, nested flashbacks\, we'll do it all. \n \n3–4 pm PT Classes: \n \nPoetry Under Pressure: Finding the Freedom in Constraints with Jennifer Perrine \nConstraints can help us shake off our usual writing habits\, nudge our poetry in a new direction\, or find language for what seems unspeakable. We’ll write using several playful and poetic constraints—such as lipograms\, acrostics\, and bout rimés—to discover what happens when we write our way through tricky restrictions. \n \nSubtexts and Subtweets in Modern Fiction with Carolyn Abram \nAs more and more communication moves online\, fiction writers are faced with a dilemma–how do you depict a conversation when it's happening over text\, online? In this fast-paced class\, we'll look at some examples from modern fiction\, talk about the ways that text-based exchanges differ from their IRL counterparts\, and practice converting texts into a fiction dialogue. \n \nWriting the Possible: Micro Memoirs with Darien Hsu Gee \nMicro prose (300 words or less) provides an unexpected pathway into the narrative of our lives. Poet Maggie Smith’s heartfelt and captivating memoir\, You Could Make This Place Beautiful\, is filled with 208 micro memoirs\, lyrical vignettes about the hardest and most beautiful moments of her life. We’ll discuss the micro prose form\, do an in-class writing prompt\, then explore what’s possible with the work and getting it into the world. \n \nSomeday This Will Be Funny: Mine Your Life for Humor with Natasha Moni \nHow do you find your comedic voice in literary writing? Looking beyond the usual suspects to comedy itself\, this class will use prompts/quotes from modern comedic geniuses to jumpstart your own exploration of humor. DESCRIPTION:Write Time for Teens is a free drop-in writing circle for creative writing teens ages 13-19. We welcome young writers to explore a variety of writing genres and techniques\, flex and perfect their skills\, and celebrate their work in community with their fellow artists! All sessions are facilitated by a published writer and experienced youth educator. \n  \nVirtual Write Time sessions occur on two Wednesdays per month from 5:00-6:00 pm PT on Zoom throughout the school year. Please note that this is a program for TEENS ONLY! Because this program involves youth\, we require that all participants who join via Zoom start the hour with their cameras on so that Hugo House instructors can verify the identity of attendees. If you don’t verify your identity when asked by the instructor\, we reserve the right to remove you from the Zoom meeting.  \n  \nPlease include accommodation requests upon registration at least 72 hours in advance. If you have questions\, please email youth@hugohouse.org.  \n \nInterested in joining us in-person? In-person Write Time sessions take place on the first or second Saturday of the month from 1:00-2:00 pm PT at Hugo House throughout the school year. Snacks are provided.

DESCRIPTION:Works in Progress is Hugo House's semi-monthly open mic series inclusive of diverse formats and storytelling crafts. Read your work—poetry\, fiction\, essays\, memoirs\, plays\, music\, comedy\, and more—and connect with our literary community!  \n \nWe are actively cultivating a low-pressure\, welcoming environment for readers and guests of all skill levels and literary experience. We especially encourage BIPOC\, LGBTQIA2S+\, and other marginalized voices to take the mic at Works in Progress.   \n \nAnnouncing a new NEW format! Hugo House invites our WIP community to join us before the open mic portion of the event for an all-new writing group!  \n \nDoors to the Salon will now open at 5:00 pm PT for interested writers who want to come early\, carve out some sacred writing time\, and share ideas on craft and content. This open\, unstructured space is intended to create opportunities for folks to build community and enjoy some quality time writing their own works-in-progress! Anticipate complimentary donuts and coffee! \n \nOpen Mic Guidelines \n\nReading is open to all!\nYou don’t have to read. Guests and audience members are encouraged to attend.\nSign-up for open mic begins at 5:00pm and will be rolling up until event start at 7:00pm. Only one sign-up per person. \nThe open mic is divided into two sets of readings.\nThere is a brief intermission approx. 15 minutes between the two groups of readers. \nAll 25 reading slots will be randomly selected from a fishbowl. \nEach reader has 5 minutes to read. Be mindful of your excerpt length and practice before hand if you can!\n\nThe House bar will be open to serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. \n \nWe encourage your feedback on how we can continue to build an inclusive and engaging environment at these events!
