SUMMARY:My A.I. Is My Co-Writer: A Double Book Launch with Sasha Stiles and K Allado-McDowell
DESCRIPTION:This event will explore the nascent\, fascinating intersection of writing and Artificial Intelligence\, introducing the creative and imaginative potential of this technology to an audience of curious readers and writers who may be interested in exploring AI's potential for themselves. \n \nIt will explore the craft of authoring a text with a nonhuman writing partner\, and into the questions of what authorship and inspiration really are. \n \nCan a neural net be creative? Can a poem generated by a machine truly move us\, and if so\, what does that mean about our own human consciousness?  \n \nAt the same time\, the event will seek to open up an important dialogue about the cultural and social implications of AI natural language processing\, and artificial intelligence more broadly. \n \nWhat is GPT-3 technology\, and how does hold a mirror up to humanity\, for better and for worse? \n \nMost of all\, it will expand and update our approach to reading and writing poetry by asking what we can learn about ourselves by collaborating with intelligent machines to discover our own poetry.

SUMMARY:Poetry’s Possible Powers: A Reading and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:For the West Coast debut of her memoir Poetry’s Possible Worlds\, Lesley Wheeler leads a reading and discussion about what reading and writing poetry can do for individuals and communities. According to cognitive scientists\, the experience of “literary transportation”—getting lost in a book—can change a person\, starting with small physical alterations in heartrate and respiration\, but sometimes extending to transforming attitudes. The artistic experience of “flow” has parallel effects; a regular practice of expressive writing can calm and sometimes even heal. Washington State Poet Laureate Rena Priest along with Jeannine Hall Gailey\, Mita Mahato\, Martha Silano\, and Lesley Wheeler will share their own poems and poems by others\, reflecting on how reading and writing help them cope with challenges including health crisis\, environmental emergency\, and personal and historical trauma. \n \nRena Priest appears courtesy of the Washington State Poet Laureate's Office\, supported in part by Washington Humanities and the Washington State Arts Commission.

SUMMARY:Write with Hugo House with Alma García
DESCRIPTION:Our mission during this time of distraction\, artistic fatigue\, and social isolation is to create a regular time and space for writers to write and to meet each other. In this group\, writers introduce themselves and are provided optional fiction\, poetry and nonfiction prompts to work on for 60-70 minutes of sustained silent writing time\, though they are more than welcome to work on their own projects instead. Small group breakout sessions at the end of our time together encourage participants to share and respond to work generated during the session\, or just get to know the other writers in the group. Register below to receive virtual attendance information. \n \nAbout Write with Hugo House (in partnership with the Seattle Public Library) \nWrite with Hugo House is a free drop-in writing circle for all ages and genres of writing. Bring something you’re working on\, or just come ready to write. You will have the opportunity to share your work and get feedback—but only if you want to (no pressure). You can also use this time to increase productivity on your current work in progress\, surrounded by fellow writers. \n \nThe Library fully complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and provides accommodations by request for physical and virtual access to library programs\, services\, and other needs to ensure these resources are available to people with disabilities. Please contact leap@spl.org\, at least 7 calendar days in advance to request an accommodation.

SUMMARY:Reading: "A Prayer for a Non-Religious Autistic" with Lucas Scheelk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual reading with Lucas Scheelk as they read from and share their latest work\, A Prayer for a Non-Religious Autistic. Lucas' work is not afraid to be intimate with multilayered truths: a family history book for those who (in various ways) choose their own\, a Jewish conversion story\, disability advocacy\, a literary supply of special interests as palate cleansers\, and a behind-the-scenes feature on the effects of misdiagnosis\, mental illness\, and addiction. \n \nA Prayer for a Non-Religious Autistic is a family history book for those who (in various ways) choose their own\, a Jewish conversion story\, disability advocacy\, a literary supply of special interests as palate cleansers\, and a behind-the-scenes feature on the effects of misdiagnosis\, mental illness\, and addiction. The repetition used throughout is both cyclical (a reminder that healing is not linear) and\, as described at the start of the book\, autistic literature. Accompanying Scheelk’s third poetry book includes image descriptors\, a trigger warning list\, and a Disability Resources section to encourage self-education.

SUMMARY:Write with Hugo House with Jeanine Walker
DESCRIPTION:In this group\, we’ll focus on generative writing through poetry prompts. The session will begin with introductions and a short warm-up\, after which we’ll read two separate poems and write in response to those. At times writers will be invited to create community through sharing words or ideas with other writers in small groups. Attendees will leave the class with 2-3 new drafts of poems. Designed for all writers\, this group supports poets as well those working in other genres\, as the skills practiced in poetry can be thought of as “cross-training” for memoir and fiction\, too. \n \nAbout Write with Hugo House (in partnership with the Seattle Public Library) \nWrite with Hugo House is a free drop-in writing circle for all ages and genres of writing.

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Ruth Ozeki
DESCRIPTION:One of our favorite writers\, and human beings who are of the writerly persuasion\, novelist\, filmmaker\, and Zen Buddhist priest Ruth Ozeki makes this most welcome in-person Seattle return for the paperback release of last year’s luminous novel\, her fourth\, The Book of Form and Emptiness (Penguin). We had a wonderful online launch for this book in hardcover – this scheduled in-person appearance should be even better. Ruth Ozeki is a presence. And her books\, including The Book of Form and Emptiness: “[A] tale of sorrow\, danger and tentative redemption serves as the springboard for extended meditations on the interdependence of all beings\, the magic of books\, the disastrous ecological and spiritual effects of unchecked consumerism and more . . . one of Ozeki’s gifts as a novelist is the ability to enfold provocative intellectual material within a human story grounded in sharply observed social detail . . . The Book itself has a marvelous voice: adult\, ironic\, affirming at every turn the importance of books as a repository of humanity’s deepest wisdom and highest aspirations.” — The Washington Post. \n \n“[Ozeki] writes with bountiful insight\, exuberant imagination\, and levitating grace about psychic diversity\, our complicated attitude toward our possessions\, street protests\, climate change\, and such wonders as crows\, the moon\, and snow globes. Most inventively\, Ozeki celebrates the profound relationship between reader and writer. This enthralling\, poignant\, funny\, and mysterious saga\, thrumming with grief and tenderness\, beauty and compassion\, offers much wisdom.” — Booklist. \n \n“This compassionate novel of life\, love and loss glows in the dark. Its strange\, beautiful pages turn themselves. If you’ve lost your way with fiction over the last year or two\, let The Book of Form and Emptiness light your way home.” — David Mitchell. \n  \nCo-presented by The Elliott Bay Book Company and Hugo House. The Book of Form and Emptiness is available for purchase Elliott Bay Book Company here.

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Suzanne Simard
DESCRIPTION:University of British Columbia forest ecologist Suzanne Simard\, long renowned among people who study forests and trees\, showed the world what she has been about in decades of life and work in her brilliant book first published last year\, Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest (Vintage). She kindly gave Elliott Bay readers a memorably wonderful zoom program for the hardcover\, and is now down for this special Saturday afternoon with the paperback newly out.  \n \n“Simard has spent decades with her hands in the soil\, designing experiments and piecing together the remarkable mysteries of forest ecology . . . elegantly detailed . . . deeply personal . . . A testament to Simard’s skill as a science communicator. Her research is clearly defined\, the steps of her experiments articulated\, her astonishing results explained and the implications laid bare: We ignore the complexity of forests at our peril.”—The New York Times. “Finding the Mother Tree reminds us that the world is a web of stories\, connecting us to one another. Her vivid manuscript carries the stories of trees\, fungi\, soil and bears–and of a human being listening in on the conversation. The interplay of personal narrative\, scientific insights and the amazing revelations about the life of the forest make a compelling story. Dr. Simard’s journey as a scientist embodies the power of curiosity coupled to commitment to listen to the natural world and the courage to share what she has learned\, against the resistance of scientific establishment. I have great admiration for her science and her storytelling alike. These are stories that the world needs to hear.”—Robin Wall Kimmerer. \n  \nPurchase Finding the Mother Tree from our bookseller partners\, Elliott Bay Book Company. \n  \nCo-presented by Elliott Bay Book Company and Hugo House.

SUMMARY:Exiled Home: An Evening with Two Expatriate Poets
DESCRIPTION:"I flew home— / then I flew from home— / having found my home is flight."  \nExpatriate voices have always enriched our collective experience of literature. As Tolstoy asserted: "If literature is NOT translated . . . it's like blood that stays locked in one part of the body." Translation\, while often a primary transfusion\, is not the only medium of this profound and essential circulation. Another significant form is travelers who've gone on private Odysseys . . . and then returned to tell the tales those journeys have sculpted in them. Bolstered by the edges they've crossed\, those travelers return with new ways of seeing that lead to new ways of saying. \nDiving deep into themes of traveling and transformation\, celebrated Prague-based American poet Lucien Zell (heralded by Alan Levy as a "21st Century Troubadour") joins internationally acclaimed British haiku poet Michael Dylan Welch for an evening of poetry and music. Emceed by Heidi Seaborn\, the executive editor of The Adroit Journal\, expect to encounter new ways of saying that lead to new ways of seeing.
