Designed for all writers\, this group supports poets as well those working in other genres\, as the skills practiced in poetry can be thought of as “cross-training” for memoir and fiction\, too. \n \nAbout Write with Hugo House (in partnership with the Seattle Public Library) \nWrite with Hugo House is a free drop-in writing circle for all ages and genres of writing. Bring something you’re working on\, or just come ready to write. You will have the opportunity to share your work and get feedback—but only if you want to (no pressure). DESCRIPTION:Join Hugo House in welcoming back SOAP and The Baker Theatre Workshop as they present 1954—The Kings Go South. \n \nABOUT THE PLAY \n \nThe year is 1954. Should young Martin King and Coretta Scott\, recently married\, leave the academic world and relative peace of Boston for small-town Alabama – not far from where Coretta grew up and faced the brutalities of the deep South? \n \nMartin has an offer to become the senior pastor at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church\, in Montgomery. But he can also go to Detroit or Philadelphia\, where he can take the number-two role in a much larger church. Coretta has sworn she would never go back to Alabama. Meanwhile\, Coretta has a good friend and fellow student at the New England Conservatory\, a brilliant vocal performer who will no longer sing because of news reaching her from Europe about her family's tragic losses in the Holocaust. \n \nAfter ten years of walking across Europe\, her uncle emerges\, alive\, in her family’s modest apartment\, and the dam comes loose. A dramatic turn leads to a stunning musical moment as 1954 ends\, and the work of Martin and Coretta in Alabama begins. \n \nABOUT SEATTLE ONE-ACT PLAY PROJECT & THE BAKER THEATRE WORKSHOP \n \nThe mission of the Seattle One-Act Play Project (SOAP) and Baker Theatre Workshop is to support the creation and performance of new works of theatre in Seattle\, with a special concern for involving low-income high-school students. \n \nWe aspire to identify and nurture new works of theatre in their early phases\, and we perform with the goal of showing what’s possible and not what has been polished.

Thank you for your understanding. \n \nIn a global literary and intellectual culture awash in misinformation and at the same time\, so seemingly obsessed with the rhetoric of free speech\, cancellation\, and the supposed dangers of things like "critical race theory\," how can we approach the classics—the books often thought of as the cornerstones of Western literature\, if not Western civilization full-stop—in ways that are novel\, galvanizing\, and perhaps even reparative? How do we read\, how have we been taught to read\, and what does any of that have to do with notions like resistance\, or indeed revolution? We’ll talk Homer\, Austen\, Cinderella\, images of the American West as envisioned by people outside of it\, the poetry of Gwendolyn Brooks\, translation\, dictatorship\, and what it can mean to be a reader in the world. Elaine Castillo will be joined in conversation by Jen Soriano. \nWord Works craft talks by novelists\, essayists\, poets\, and memoirists focus on writing as process rather than finished product\, examining how language works to inspire and provoke new ideas through live close readings of the writer’s own or others’ work. DESCRIPTION:Page Meets Stage\, an 18-year-old poetry series with a long-time association with AWP\, has been called “where the Pulitzer Prize meets the poetry slam\," and was founded at the Bowery Poetry Club in New York City. Different poets—some who write primarily for the page and others who are more performance-oriented—take the stage one after another and answer poem for poem. Poems are read "popcorn style\," with no set order and sometimes no set list in an ongoing poetic conversation. It’s not a poetry slam or a competition in any way but an ongoing conversation about where poetry thrives and if it is the job of the poet to make sure words go in one ear and stay there. Hosted by series founder Taylor Mali.  \n \nCheck out YouTube to see some of the memorable moments in the series\, or go to www.PageMeetsStage.com for the complete schedule.  \n \nThe House bar will be open to serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.  \n \nAdmission is offered on a sliding scale\, from $0-$25. Revenue from ticket sales directly supports Hugo House's mission to provide space for all to read words\, hear words\, and make their own words better. DESCRIPTION:A good poem makes feeling and thinking scrutable\, and makes use of any number of tools (think sonics\, image\, tone\, diction\, figurative speech\, lineation\, white space) to help the writer go more deeply into the material of the poem and engage the reader’s imaginative participation as fully as possible. In this talk\, Mark Doty read and discuss a small group of poems that engage with their subjects artfully\, and offer a portrait of the perceiver as well as what’s perceived.
