SUMMARY:Word Works | Bethany C. Morrow: The Importance of Thinking About Writing
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on a personal blog post\, Bethany C. Morrow will discuss how integral a stage of her writing process—thinking about writing—has been\, and why she thinks it can combat (the possible misnomer) "writer's block." Morrow will be joined in conversation by Nisi Shawl. \nWord Works craft talks by novelists\, essayists\, poets\, and memoirists focus on writing as process rather than finished product\, examining how language works to inspire and provoke new ideas through live close readings of the writer’s own or others’ work. These talks are designed to apply to writers of all genres as well as illuminate well-known works for avid readers. The talks are followed by an interview with a noted editor\, writer\, or critic. \nSee the full 2022-23 Word Works series lineup here » \nInterested in attending the entire series? Purchase a series pass to see all six events for the price of five » \n \nThank you to our Word Works season sponsor\, KCTS 9.

SUMMARY:Word Works | Elaine Castillo: On Reading\, Revolution\, and the Classics - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and will be in touch with ticket holders soon regarding their purchases. Thank you for your understanding. \n \nIn a global literary and intellectual culture awash in misinformation and at the same time\, so seemingly obsessed with the rhetoric of free speech\, cancellation\, and the supposed dangers of things like "critical race theory\," how can we approach the classics—the books often thought of as the cornerstones of Western literature\, if not Western civilization full-stop—in ways that are novel\, galvanizing\, and perhaps even reparative? How do we read\, how have we been taught to read\, and what does any of that have to do with notions like resistance\, or indeed revolution? We’ll talk Homer\, Austen\, Cinderella\, images of the American West as envisioned by people outside of it\, the poetry of Gwendolyn Brooks\, translation\, dictatorship\, and what it can mean to be a reader in the world. Elaine Castillo will be joined in conversation by Jen Soriano. SUMMARY:Write with Hugo House with Jeanine Walker
DESCRIPTION:In this group\, we’ll focus on generative writing through poetry prompts. The session will begin with introductions and a short warm-up\, after which we’ll read two separate poems and write in response to those. At times writers will be invited to create community through sharing words or ideas with other writers in small groups. Attendees will leave the class with 2-3 new drafts of poems. Designed for all writers\, this group supports poets as well those working in other genres\, as the skills practiced in poetry can be thought of as “cross-training” for memoir and fiction\, too. \n \nAbout Write with Hugo House (in partnership with the Seattle Public Library) \nWrite with Hugo House is a free drop-in writing circle for adults of all ages and genres of writing. Bring something you’re working on\, or just come ready to write. You will have the opportunity to share your work and get feedback—but only if you want to (no pressure). You can also use this time to increase productivity on your current work in progress\, surrounded by fellow writers. \n \nThe Library fully complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and provides accommodations by request for physical and virtual access to library programs\, services\, and other needs to ensure these resources are available to people with disabilities. Please contact leap@spl.org\, at least 7 calendar days in advance to request an accommodation.

SUMMARY:AWP | Page Meets Stage
DESCRIPTION:Page Meets Stage\, an 18-year-old poetry series with a long-time association with AWP\, has been called “where the Pulitzer Prize meets the poetry slam\," and was founded at the Bowery Poetry Club in New York City. Different poets—some who write primarily for the page and others who are more performance-oriented—take the stage one after another and answer poem for poem. Poems are read "popcorn style\," with no set order and sometimes no set list in an ongoing poetic conversation. It’s not a poetry slam or a competition in any way but an ongoing conversation about where poetry thrives and if it is the job of the poet to make sure words go in one ear and stay there. Hosted by series founder Taylor Mali.  \n \nCheck out YouTube to see some of the memorable moments in the series\, or go to www.PageMeetsStage.com for the complete schedule.  \n \nThe House bar will be open to serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.  \n \nAdmission is offered on a sliding scale\, from $0-$25. Revenue from ticket sales directly supports Hugo House's mission to provide space for all to read words\, hear words\, and make their own words better. We encourage you to pick a ticket price that is right for you. \n \nPlease note: Our venue can accommodate seating for 150 attendees. Pre-registration to this event is strongly encouraged\, and will be open until 1 hour before the start of the event. After this\, walk-in registration will be available at the door. \n \nTo learn more about AWP Conference & Bookfair\, visit their website here. \nTo learn more about Hugo House’s AWP events\, visit our AWP page here.

SUMMARY:Word Works | Mark Doty: Raising the Stakes
DESCRIPTION:A good poem makes feeling and thinking scrutable\, and makes use of any number of tools (think sonics\, image\, tone\, diction\, figurative speech\, lineation\, white space) to help the writer go more deeply into the material of the poem and engage the reader’s imaginative participation as fully as possible. In this talk\, Mark Doty read and discuss a small group of poems that engage with their subjects artfully\, and offer a portrait of the perceiver as well as what’s perceived. We’ll try to identify just how this work becomes urgent\, heartbreaking\, and beautiful\, enlarging what we know of the world. What makes them feel complete? Where does the magic reside? Doty will be joined in conversation by Joshua Wilkinson. \nWord Works craft talks by novelists\, essayists\, poets\, and memoirists focus on writing as process rather than finished product\, examining how language works to inspire and provoke new ideas through live close readings of the writer’s own or others’ work. SUMMARY:Write with Hugo House with Alma García
DESCRIPTION:Our mission during this time of distraction\, artistic fatigue\, and social isolation is to create a regular time and space for writers to write and to meet each other. In this group\, writers introduce themselves and are provided optional fiction\, poetry and nonfiction prompts to work on for 60-70 minutes of sustained silent writing time\, though they are more than welcome to work on their own projects instead. Small group breakout sessions at the end of our time together encourage participants to share and respond to work generated during the session\, or just get to know the other writers in the group. \n \nAbout Write with Hugo House (in partnership with the Seattle Public Library) \nWrite with Hugo House is a free drop-in writing circle for all ages and genres of writing. SUMMARY:Word Works | Katie Kitamura: Finding First Person
DESCRIPTION:From unreliability to intimacy\, first-person offers the writer a rich arsenal with which to build tension\, plot and characterization. But for Katie Kitamura\, the shift to writing in the first person was also very personal\, and had to do with her own relationship to her writing—where she located herself in her own fiction. In this craft talk\, Kitamura will look at first person examples from some of her favorite writers\, as well as her own work\, to examine the opportunities and risks of the first person voice. Kitamura will be joined in conversation by Lucy Tan. SUMMARY:Hugo Lit Series | Unearthing: Ingrid Rojas Contreras\, Matthew Olzmann\, Arianne True\, Zoser Dunbar
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, Hugo House commissions new prose\, poetry\, and songs based on a writing prompt. During the Hugo Literary Series\, authors share the results. This year\, we’ve decided to go with the theme re/birth to celebrate\, if not the end of the pandemic\, then at least some way of us living in the world with it\, and the revival/resurgence of creativity that has been dormant for two long years. \nFor this evening's event\, writers Ingrid Rojas Contreras\, Matthew Olzmann\, Arianne True\, and Zoser Dunbar present their new works based on the sub-theme of unearthing: discover (something hidden\, lost\, or kept secret) by investigation or searching. \nSee the full 2022-23 Hugo Literary Series lineup here » \nInterested in attending the entire series? Purchase a series pass to see all four events for the price of three » \nThis event will also be livestreamed! Purchase a livestream-only ticket to gain access to the stream during the event. The event stream recording will be available to view for livestream-ticket buyers through Friday\, December 9.

SUMMARY:Works in Progress (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:Works in Progress is Hugo House's semi-monthly open mic series inclusive of diverse formats and storytelling crafts. Works in Progress is held on the first Monday virtually and third Monday in-person of every month at 7 pm. Read your work—poetry\, fiction\, essays\, memoirs\, plays\, music\, comedy\, and more—and connect with our literary community! \n \nWe are actively cultivating a low-pressure\, welcoming environment for readers and guests of all skill levels and literary experience. We especially encourage BIPOC\, LGBTQIA2S+\, and other marginalized voices to take the mic at Works in Progress.  \n \nHow it works (In-Person):  \nReading is open to all! \nYou don’t have to read. Guests and audience members are encouraged to attend.  \nDoors open half an hour before showtime.  \nSign up is on a first-come basis and begins at check-in.  \nThere are 2 sets of readings with about 10 people per set for a total of 20 readers. If time allows\, we may be able to accommodate last minute entries into what's called a "lightning round"\, which allows folks to share short work\, approximately 2-3 minutes.  \nThe House bar will be open to serve alcoholic and NA beverages.  \nThere is a brief intermission\, approx. 15 minutes\, between the 2 groupings of readers.  \n \nWe encourage your feedback on how we can continue to build a safer and more engaging environment at these events! Email us at events@hugohouse.org .

SUMMARY:Word Works | Nicole Sealey: Why is Brigit Pegeen Kelly's "Song" the Perfect Poem?
DESCRIPTION:There are so many good poems. There are\, however\, very few perfect poems. While we understand perfection is subjective and unachievable\, why is Brigit Pegeen Kelly’s "Song" a favorite\, a perfect poem among poets? In this craft talk\, Nicole Sealey examines "Song\," its leaps\, sounds\, images\, digressions\, syntax\, and embellishments\, eight years in the making. Understanding the forces behind this beloved poem can give us strategies for writing our very own perfect poem. Sealey will be joined in conversation by Janae Johnson.
Registration information coming soon. \n \nAbout Write with Hugo House (in partnership with the Seattle Public Library) \nWrite with Hugo House is a free drop-in writing circle for all ages and genres of writing.
