SUMMARY:Book Launch: Sweet\, Soft\, Plenty Rhythm by Laura Warrell
DESCRIPTION:Join Laura Warrell to celebrate the release of Sweet\, Soft\, Plenty Rhythm\, a thrilling debut novel about the perennial temptations of dangerous love\, following a jazz musician and an ensemble cast of women—some charmed by him\, others scorned—who discover the power of their own voices. Warrell will be in conversation with Monica West. \n \nAbout Sweet\, Soft\, Plenty Rhythm \nIt’s 2013\, and Circus Palmer\, a forty-year-old Boston-based trumpet player and old-school ladies’ man\, lives for his music and refuses to be tied down. Before a gig in Miami\, he learns that the woman who is secretly closest to his heart\, the free-spirited drummer Maggie\, is pregnant by him. Instead of facing the necessary conversation\, Circus flees\, setting off a chain of interlocking revelations from the various women in his life. Most notable among them is his teenage daughter\, Koko\, who idolizes him and is awakening to her own sexuality even as her mentally fragile mother struggles to overcome her long-failed marriage and rejection by Circus. \nDelivering a lush orchestration of diverse female voices\, Warrell spins a provocative\, soulful\, and gripping story of passion and risk\, fathers and daughters\, wives and single women\, and\, finally\, hope and reconciliation\, in answer to the age-old question: how do we find belonging when love is unrequited?

SUMMARY:Andrew Sean Greer presents 'Less is Lost'
DESCRIPTION:Hugo House is pleased to partner with Third Place Books to welcome Andrew Sean Greer—whose 2018 novel Less was the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction—to the Third Place Books stage at Lake Forest Park! Greer will be discussing his latest novel\, Less Is Lost\, in which the awkward and lovable Arthur Less returns for an unforgettable road trip across America. \n \nPurchase tickets with Third Place Books here. \nHere's what you need to know before you purchase your ticket: \n\nTickets are required in advance. All tickets come with a copy of the event's featured book.\n1 ticket admits 2 attendees.\nTickets must be purchased through Eventbrite. Pre-order of the book will not grant you access to the event.\nIf you purchase a book-bundled ticket but are unable to attend the event\, your book will be placed on hold at our Lake Forest Park store. You may request to have your book transferred to our Ravenna or Seward Park neighborhood stores.\n\nCopies of Less is Lost and other books by Andrew Sean Greer will be available for purchase at the store. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. \n \nAbout Less Is Lost. . .\n“Go get lost somewhere\, it always does you good.” \nFor Arthur Less\, life is going surprisingly well: he is a moderately accomplished novelist in a steady relationship with his partner\, Freddy Pelu. But nothing lasts: the death of an old lover and a sudden financial crisis has Less running away from his problems yet again as he accepts a series of literary gigs that send him on a zigzagging adventure across the US. \nLess roves across the “Mild Mild West\,” through the South and to his mid-Atlantic birthplace\, with an ever-changing posse of writerly characters and his trusty duo – a human-like black pug\, Dolly\, and a rusty camper van nicknamed Rosina. He grows a handlebar mustache\, ditches his signature gray suit\, and disguises himself in the bolero-and-cowboy-hat costume of a true “Unitedstatesian”… with varying levels of success\, as he continues to be mistaken for either a Dutchman\, the wrong writer\, or\, worst of all\, a “bad gay.” \nWe cannot\, however\, escape ourselves—even across deserts\, bayous\, and coastlines. From his estranged father and strained relationship with Freddy\, to the reckoning he experiences in confronting his privilege\, Arthur Less must eventually face his personal demons. With all of the irrepressible wit and musicality that made Less a bestselling\, Pulitzer Prize-winning\, must-read breakout book\, Less Is Lost is a profound and joyous novel about the enigma of life in America\, the riddle of love\, and the stories we tell along the way.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Paul Hlava Ceballos's banana [ ] with special guests
DESCRIPTION:banana [ ] by Paul Hlava Ceballos\, winner of the 2021 Donald Hall Prize for Poetry and selected by Ilya Kaminsky\, uses poems to reveal the extractive relationship the United States has with the Americas and their peoples through poetic portraits of migrants\, family\, and personal memories. \n \nAt the heart of the book is a long poem that traces the history of bananas in Latin America using only found text from sources such as history books\, declassified CIA documents\, and commercials. The book includes collage\, Ecuadorian decimas\, a sonnet series in the voices of Incan royalty at the moment of colonization\, and a long poem interspersed with photos and the author’s mother’s bilingual idioms. Traversing language and borders\, history and story\, traditional and invented forms\, this book guides us beyond survival to love. \n \nPaul will read a selection from the collection and be joined in conversation by Quenton Baker\, Jane Wong\, and Michelle Peñaloza. An audience Q&A and book signing will follow the event. Delicious fried plantains and bowls of corn will be served by an accompanying vendor\, Garzón Latinx Street Food!

SUMMARY:Book Launch: "First Consonants" by John Whittier Treat
DESCRIPTION:Hugo House welcomes author John Whittier Treat as he launches his new novel\, First Consonants\, the story of a boy who grows up a stutterer in the Pacific Northwest. Using his fists whenever words fail him\, Brian's acts of violence are exacerbated by the abuse he suffers as a teenager at the hands of his parish priest and by others close to him. As an adult\, he cannot shake the uncontrollable rage that he feels towards his family and the rest of speaking society. Ready to finish his life in isolation\, Brian moves to Alaska. Here\, he is confronted with the chance to redeem not just himself but the world.  \n \nPart reading and part discussion\, John Whittier Treat will take us on a journey about stuttering in literature and its impact on conversations about disability. He will be joined in conversation with fellow author Felice Picano.

SUMMARY:Write with Hugo House with Alma García
DESCRIPTION:Our mission during this time of distraction\, artistic fatigue\, and social isolation is to create a regular time and space for writers to write and to meet each other. In this group\, writers introduce themselves and are provided optional fiction\, poetry and nonfiction prompts to work on for 60-70 minutes of sustained silent writing time\, though they are more than welcome to work on their own projects instead. Small group breakout sessions at the end of our time together encourage participants to share and respond to work generated during the session\, or just get to know the other writers in the group. \n \nAbout Write with Hugo House (in partnership with the Seattle Public Library) \nWrite with Hugo House is a free drop-in writing circle for all ages and genres of writing. Bring something you’re working on\, or just come ready to write. You will have the opportunity to share your work and get feedback—but only if you want to (no pressure). You can also use this time to increase productivity on your current work in progress\, surrounded by fellow writers. \n \nThe Library fully complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and provides accommodations by request for physical and virtual access to library programs\, services\, and other needs to ensure these resources are available to people with disabilities. Please contact leap@spl.org\, at least 7 calendar days in advance to request an accommodation.

SUMMARY:Works in Progress (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:Works in Progress is Hugo House's semi-monthly open mic series inclusive of diverse formats and storytelling crafts. Works in Progress is held on the first Monday virtually and third Monday in-person of every month at 7 pm. Read your work—poetry\, fiction\, essays\, memoirs\, plays\, music\, comedy\, and more—and connect with our literary community! \n \nWe are actively cultivating a low-pressure\, welcoming environment for readers and guests of all skill levels and literary experience. We especially encourage BIPOC\, LGBTQIA2S+\, and other marginalized voices to take the mic at Works in Progress.  \n \nHow it works (In-Person):  \nReading is open to all! \nYou don’t have to read. Guests and audience members are encouraged to attend.  \nDoors open half an hour before showtime.  \nSign up is on a first-come basis and begins at check-in.  \nThere are 2 sets of readings with about 10 people per set for a total of 20 readers. If time allows\, we may be able to accommodate last minute entries into what's called a "lightning round"\, which allows folks to share short work\, approximately 2-3 minutes.  \nThe House bar will be open to serve alcoholic and NA beverages.  \nThere is a brief intermission\, approx. 15 minutes\, between the 2 groupings of readers.  \n \nWe encourage your feedback on how we can continue to build a safer and more engaging environment at these events! Email us at events@hugohouse.org .

SUMMARY:Write with Hugo House with Jeanine Walker
DESCRIPTION:In this group\, we’ll focus on generative writing through poetry prompts. The session will begin with introductions and a short warm-up\, after which we’ll read two separate poems and write in response to those. At times writers will be invited to create community through sharing words or ideas with other writers in small groups. Attendees will leave the class with 2-3 new drafts of poems. Designed for all writers\, this group supports poets as well those working in other genres\, as the skills practiced in poetry can be thought of as “cross-training” for memoir and fiction\, too. \n \nAbout Write with Hugo House (in partnership with the Seattle Public Library) \nWrite with Hugo House is a free drop-in writing circle for all ages and genres of writing. SUMMARY:A Century of Grace: Readings from Two Poets Laureate
DESCRIPTION:Texas State Poets Laureate Karla K. Morton (2010) and Alan Birkelbach (2005) did what has never been done before: they traveled to all of America's 62 National Parks\, wrote poetry\, took photos\, and put them into a beautiful full color\, hard-bound coffee table book: The National Parks: A Century of Grace (TCU Press). \n \nWith this winner of the Indie National Book Award for Poetry\, the authors wanted to help culturally preserve and protect these sacred spaces for the next seven generations\, and contribute a percentage of their royalties back to the National Park System. They will be reading from this book as well as selections from their other works\, such as Morton's recent award winning poetry book\, Politics of the Minotaur (Texas Review Press). The authors will be in conversation together\, as well as with the audience for a brief Q&A.

SUMMARY:Clitaurus Chronicles: A Climactic Journey
DESCRIPTION:Sex ed isn't just about preventing bad stuff from happening. It's also about learning how to play! \n \nPapeachu Press invites parents and other adults to join sex therapist and Clitaurus Chronicles author\, Breona Mendoza\, at Hugo House for a presentation centering pleasure\, communication\, consent\, and how to talk to kids about these often-overlooked aspects of sexuality. To be followed by an outdoor ice cream social! \n \nClitaurus Chronicles advocates for pleasure and self-empowerment. Written in the style of an early-reader picture book\, this visual narrative follows Clitty: an adorable\, clitoris-shaped\, cartoon dinosaur with a dream to write a novel. The conflict surfaces right away—she needs to find her narrative climax. \n \nBooks will be sold at the event\, and are also available online at Papeachu Press. \n \nPapeachu is a feminist small press publishing the works of women and nonbinary creators\, in order to elevate and venerate a body of work often under-appreciated. We strive to support the best art and elevate new voices.
