What’s worth your time, and what merely wastes it? Join us for a panel discussion on funding sources, residencies, and conferences. Whether your focus is on craft, networking, or publishing, there are scores of conferences to consider, as well as foundations that want to support your work at home. Sure, Hedgebrook is tough to beat, but other residencies and fellowships do offer the time and space in which to create. Cost, distance, and community versus isolation are among the factors to be discussed. Sources to help fund conference attendance are also on the agenda.
Donna Miscolta is the author of the novel When the de la Cruz Family Danced (Signal 8 Press, 2011). Her short story manuscript was a runner-up for the 2012 Flannery O’Connor Short Fiction Award and a finalist for the 2010 Grace Paley Prize for Short Fiction. She has been awarded residencies across the country and has received a number of grants, including an Artist Trust Fellowship, and the Bread Loaf/Rona Jaffe Scholarship for Fiction.
Susan Rich is the author of The Alchemist’s Kitchen (2010), which was a finalist for the Foreword Prize and the Washington State Book Award, and two other books of poetry. She has been awarded grants from 4Culture, Artists Trust, and CityArtists, and has attended ten writers residencies, including several international programs.
Claudia Rowe, a journalist transitioning to full-time creative writing, has witnessed the profound effect residencies can have. Her personal essays have appeared in several anthologies, including A Matter of Choice: 25 People Who Transformed Their Lives (Seal Press). Currently, she is a fellow in the Jack Straw Writers Program and the recipient of a Promise Award from the Sustainable Arts Foundation.
