Hugo Literary Series

Creativity in action.

Every year, Hugo House commissions new prose, poetry, and songs based on a writing prompt. During the Hugo Literary Series, authors share the results. The series is a collage of unexpected styles and different points of view. Writers and musicians are encouraged to work without a sense of obligation, censorship, or stylistic frame.

You’ll see writers willing to take risks, to work without the safety net of editors, publishers, or reviewers affirming the work before they stand in front of an audience and read it aloud. They are writers who share the exhilaration of creating something new and sharing it with an audience before the work appears in a book, between the glossy covers of a magazine, or pressed in vinyl.

2022 Theme: Time

There’s little doubt that time has felt weird over these last two years. For this season’s Hugo Literary Series, twelve writers and musicians will be riffing on variations of time—time in reverse (Emit), time flashing ahead or away (Uncountable), same time, different perspectives (Rashomon), and The Time Trapper—to reflect on the jerky start-stop of pandemic time, and when (if?) things might return to normal. Plus, this year is Hugo House’s 25th anniversary, so what better time than now to celebrate?

Time waits for no one—snag a ticket to the series before time runs out!
