This course is a survey of speculative fiction: reading it and writing it. Every week, students will come to class having read bold, playful, innovative work from writers like Ling Ma, Jamaica Kincaid, Italo Calvino, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Franz Kafka. Students will respond to these writers' stories by imagining realities of their own, generating work outside and during class. The instructor will provide feedback on their work, lead in-class discussions, and create a space for students to experiment with narrative.
