The Mountain’s Out: Using Landscape as a Lens for the Essay [Christine Hemp]

As naturalist John Muir suggests: “When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.” This weekend workshop will embolden those who wish to write through—rather than about—the natural world. Reading works from Isabella Bird to Brian Doyle, we will address structure and form, including the braided essay, the emblematic moment, and the frame. Our encounters with the wild (urban or hinterland) will engender a larger story. Come with a raincoat and a desire to write as if life depended on it.
