Writing as self-expression—an attempt to reach the core truth of ourselves—can be limiting. Eventually we either run out of material or end up using the same clichés over and over. This class introduces some experimental techniques distilled from the practices of different avant-garde poets such as Jen Bervin, Doug Nufer, Niger Christenson, and others. These techniques, such as parataxis and writing with constraints, can help us escape our personal clichés in writing and open up our writing life, allowing the language of other writers into our world.
Due to COVID-19, all classes will take place online until further notice. If there's a possibility that your class might take place in person, you will be notified in advance. Even if classes can be held in person, there will always be a hybrid option to participate via Zoom.
Classes with "Zoom" in the title will be held via Zoom even after our doors open. Classes listed as "Online" will be held on Wet Ink, our platform for asynchronous learning.
All times are listed in Pacific Time.
