Three Pacific Northwest Poets: Laurie Blauner, Richard Robbins, and Patricia Clark

Hugo House welcomes three poets with deep roots in the Pacific Northwest. Laurie Blauner, Richard Robbins, and Patricia Clark all studied with PNW legends Richard Hugo and Madeline DeFrees at the University of Montana. They are eager to share new work. The readings will be followed by a brief Q+A.

Laurie Blauner

Laurie Blauner’s latest poetry book, Come Closer, won the Library of Poetry Award from Bitter Oleander Press. Her most recent novel is available from Spuyten Duyvil Press and is called Out of Which Came Nothing. Her second nonfiction book called Swerve is forthcoming Spring 2025 from Rain Mountain Press. Her work has appeared in The New Republic, The Nation, Bomb Magazine, Poetry, The Georgia Review, American Poetry Review, Mississippi Review, Tupelo Quarterly Denver Quarterly, The Colorado Review, The Collagist, Slate, The Best Small Fictions, and many other magazines. Richard Robbins

Richard Robbins received his MFA at the University of Montana, where he studied with Richard Hugo and Madeline DeFrees. He has published seven books of poems, most recently The Oratory of All Souls, which Lynx House Press released in 2023. He has received awards from The Loft, the Minnesota State Arts Board, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Society of America. From 1986-2014, Robbins directed the Good Thunder Reading Series at Minnesota State University Mankato, where he recently retired from the creative writing program. He now lives in Oregon. Patricia Clark

Patricia Clark is the author most recently of Self-Portrait with a Million Dollars. O Lucky Day, her seventh book of poems, is just out from Madville Publishing. Her poem “Astronomy: In Perfect Silence’” is on its way to the moon as part of the Lunar Codex on a NASA Space X flight as of January 2025.. After studying at the University of Montana, Patricia went on to receive a Ph.D. (English/Creative Writing) at the University of Houston where she studied with Cynthia Macdonald, Stanley Plumly, and Edward Hirsch. Patricia taught for more than 30 years at Grand Valley State University where she was also the university's poet-in-residence; in addition, she was the Poet Laureate of the City of Grand Rapids from 2005-2007.
