Writing Classes for Teachers: Haibun

Haibun is an ancient Japanese form of writing that incorporates short passages of poetry (often haiku) with longer, usually autobiographical, prose. In this workshop led by writer and teacher Rebecca Brown, we will explore the origin and development of haibun, from 11th century diaries, miscellany and collections of haiku to looser modern versions. We will look at how haibun blurs the distinctions between poetry and prose, fiction and non-fiction, creative and critical writing. We will also look at recent American versions of haibun and see how writers incorporate haibun into larger texts. We will use all of the above to inspire the creation of our own haibun and other wonderfully uncategorizeable texts.  5-7 p.m. Cabaret. FREE. RSVP to writingclassforteachers@gmail.com.
