Friendship Over Time in Fiction [Liza Birnbaum]
All Levels | Novels that trace the course of friendship over many years let us look closely at how writers create dynamic characters, complex relationships, and structures that allow the reader to experience the passage of time alongside the protagonists. In this class, we’ll read four novels centered on long-lasting friendships, including Virginia Woolf’s The Waves and Toni Morrison’s Sula, and consider how these authors and their craft decisions might influence our own work. Expect lively conversation and prompts for your own writing! (Students interested in expanding their own writing about friendship will have the option of continuing with an eight-week workshop in the spring.)
All students in reading classes will receive a book club discount on the instructor’s reading list at the Elliott Bay Book Co.
