Intro to Poetry: Poems from the Everyday [Bill Carty]

This class serves as an introduction to poetry writing, combining in-class exercises, take-home assignments, and discussion of a wide range of poems. We’ll look at the intersection of poetry and the everyday as a means for generating our own poems; we’ll also study how this concept has its roots in traditional forms such as the ode and haiku. We’ll investigate how poets both recent (Ralph Angel, Rachel Zucker, Robert Creeley) and past (especially Emily Dickinson and John Keats) have taken familiar objects, speech, and image to unexpected places.
