This two session "crash course" in researching and writing travel content will guide students as they explore communicating a sense of place using humor, personal narrative, listicles, and social commentary. Participants will also have a Q&A with a travel media professional (a magazine editor or travel industry publicist) about how to connect with regional travel bureaus as a writer, plus pitch content to a variety of publications.

ADDITIONAL CLASS DETAILS: 

  • This class includes: 
    • Generative Writing: students create new work during class or from assignments.
    • Workshop: students submit work for critique from the teacher and class.
    • Craft Discussion: teachers and students explore essential elements of the craft.
  • Feedback in class: Both peer and instructor feedback given. 
  • Work outside of class: 1-2 hours of writing or reading outside of class.

Rachel Werner is a teaching artist for Hugo House, The Loft Literary Center, and Lighthouse Writers Workshop in addition to being the founder of The Little Book Project WI. Her literary writing and craft essays have been featured by Off Menu Press, Digging Through The Fat, and Voyage YA Literary Journal. A selection of Rachel's recipes is included in Wisconsin Cocktails (UW-Press, 2020), and her poetry in the anthology Hope Is The Thing: Wisconsinites on Perseverance in a Pandemic (The Wisconsin Historical Society, 2021). She also regularly contributes content to TheKitchn, The Spruce Eats, and Fabulous Wisconsin. Her latest book, Glow and Grow: A Brown Girl's Positive Body Guide (Free Spirit Publishing), is forthcoming in fall 2024.
