Read it and Weep: the Art of Emotion [Emma Torzs]
All Levels | Ever wept over a book? Grinned at a happy ending? If so, you’ve felt the power of a well-crafted emotional scene—and you know that making a reader feel something is more complicated than simply writing, “It was sad.” This class will engage with work by prose writers across genre lines, such as Baldwin, Lui, and Rowling. We’ll examine what elements of craft go into successful emotional scenework—and then we’ll implement these elements and learn to bring about a true sympathetic response in our readers. You’ll leave with a toolbox of tricks, ready to charge your own prose with emotional electricity.
