Six Keys to Nonfiction Prose [Wendy Call]
Six weeks, six keys. Each week, we’ll explore one essential element of creative nonfiction: story arc, first-person narrator, strong characters, compelling theme, and inspiration to keep writing. Short readings by James Baldwin, Jo Ann Beard, Zora Neale Hurston, Annie Dillard, Rubén Martínez, Lucia Perillo, and Alice Walker will guide us. All nonfiction genres, from literary journalism to lyric essay, are welcome. We will spend roughly equal portions of our class time discussing the readings, reviewing elements of craft, and completing writing exercises. This is not a workshop.
No class Nov. 10.
