The Poetics of Silence
Marianne Moore wrote, "The deepest feeling always shows itself in silence." In this course, we will examine the role of silence in the works of various writers, from Hannah Arendt's "speechless wonder at the miracle of being" to Lorine Niedecker's "condensery," Audre Lorde's "transformation of silence into language and action," and Phil Elverum's "quiet, untreasured, in-between times." This is a generative seminar, and we will write a series of poems rethinking the possibilities of silence and voice in our poetry.
