This course will focus on developing your characters’ motivations and personalities by tying their most humiliating traits and secrets to plot development. In addition to writing exercises, we will explore and analyze textual examples by authors such as Junot Diaz, Lynda Barry, David Sedaris, and George Saunders.
Due to COVID-19, all classes will take place online-either through Zoom or through Wet Ink, our asynchronous learning platform-through the end of 2020.

Alissa Nutting is the author of the novel, Tampa, and the short story collection Unclean Jobs for Women and Girls, which won the Starcherone Prize for Innovative Fiction. Her fiction has appeared in The Norton Introduction to Literature, Tin House, Bomb, and Conduit; her essays have appeared in Fence, the New York Times, O: The Oprah Magazine, and other venues.
