Character is an element of fiction that is often discussed in writing workshops. But there’s a difference between creating character studies or sketches and employing fully-realized characters in the service of a piece of fiction. Through brief examples from novels and short stories as well as in-class exercises, character essentials will be discussed and explored as a means for writing fiction that feels both authentic and authentically populated.
Meg Wolitzer is a novelist whose recent books are The Interestings and the YA novel Belzhar. Wolitzer reviews books frequently for NPR’s All Things Considered, and in 2013, with singer-songwriter Suzzy Roche, she was a guest artist at Princeton University.
