Half-Breed is a sound-and-text performance exploring and examining historical and contemporary perceptions of multiracial people and mixed-race identity. Created and performed by San Francisco-based poet and musician PC Muñoz, Half-Breed began with a fellowship at The Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis and has since been performed in Los Angeles, New York City, San Jose, Oakland, and San Francisco.
This evening is also the Pacific Northwest release for PC’s new album, Physical Science, and its companion chapbook Inside Pocket of a Houndstooth Blazer; album/book bundles will be available at the performance.
Seattle-based flutist/improviser Leanna Keith will join PC for his performance, and the evening will open with a reading by Seattle author Sharon H. Chang.

PC Muñoz is a recording artist, drummer, and writer based in San Francisco. His body of work includes recordings across multiple mediums, from Grammy-nominated contemporary classical music to CMJ-charting funk songs and modern dance/multimedia productions. PC’s past projects include collaborations with rock legend Jackson Browne, dream-pop artist Ingrid Chavez, longtime Kronos Quartet cellist Joan Jeanrenaud, Emmy-winning virtuoso Van-Anh Vo, Dr. Fink of Prince and the Revolution, Oakland hip-hop artist Kev Choice, and countless other musicians and recording artists across a wide range of genres. He was a 2015 Dresher Ensemble artist-in-residence in Oakland, Calif., a 2014 Asian Pacific Islander Cultural Center grantee, a 2013 Loft Literary Center Equilibrium Fellow in Minneapolis, and was a Board Governor for the SF Chapter of the Recording Academy/Grammy’s from 2015-2018. Leanna Keith is a freelance flutist, improviser, and composer in the Seattle area who delights in creating sound experiences that make audiences laugh, cry, and say: “I didn’t know the flute could do that!” She actively performs around the country in concert halls, bars, cafes, and classrooms — bringing along a menagerie of flutes that include her bass flute, alto flute, dizi, and shinobue as well as a variety of electronics. Sometimes she creates soaring melodies, and other times she beatboxes and vocalizes. She also is dedicated to playing music by composers who are still living, and advocates for the usage of music as social activism. Leanna is currently a co-director of the chamber music ensemble Kin of the Moon, the flute instructor at Cornish College of the Arts, as well as a Teaching Artist with the Seattle Symphony.
Sharon H. Chang is an award-winning author, photographer, and activist with a lens on racism, social justice, and the Asian American diaspora. She is author of the critically acclaimed academic book Raising Mixed Race: Multiracial Asian Children In a Post-Racial World and just released her new memoir, Hapa Tales and Other Lies: A Mixed Race Memoir About the Hawai’i I Never Knew. Sharon was named 2015 Social Justice Commentator of the Year by The Seattle Globalist and 2016 Favorite Local API Author/Writer by International Examiner readers. She is currently working her third book looking at Asian American women, gender, and race, to be co-authored with preeminent sociologist Joe R. Feagin.
