Nobody’s Perfect: A Reading with Corinne Manning and Chavisa Woods

Award-winning short story writers Chavisa Woods and Corinne Manning will discuss desires and techniques for creating stories narrated and featuring flawed characters and non traditional heroes. They will each read from their work and after will discuss the ways in which class, setting, and cultural context pull on a character’s tensions and actions.

About the Readers

Corinne Manning is the author of the story collection We Had No Rules (Arsenal Pulp Press). Their stories and essays have been widely published, including anthology selection in Toward an Ethics of Activism and Shadow Map: An Anthology of Survivors of Sexual Assault. They have received grants and fellowships from The MacDowell Colony, Artist Trust, 4 Culture, and The Hub City Writer’s Project. Corinne founded the James Franco Review, an intervention project that sought to address implicit bias in the publishing industry.

 

Chavisa Woods is the author of four books, including the short fiction collection Things To Do When You’re Goth in the Country, and 100 Times (A Memoir of Sexism). Woods is a MacDowell Fellow and was the recipient of the Shirley Jackson Award, 2018, the Kathy Acker Award in writing, the Cobalt Prize for fiction, was a three time Lambda Literary Award finalist for fiction. Her work has received praise from the New York Times, Publisher’s Weekly, The Stranger, Seattle Review of Books, Booklist, Electric Lit, Pop Matters, The Rumpus, the Library Journal, and many other publications.
