Contemporary Fairy Tales [Anca Szilagyi]

Fairy tales have long been rich source material for stories. In this class, we’ll read contemporary takes from Angela Carter, Margaret Atwood, Alissa Nutting, Sarah Shun-lien Bynum, and more. We’ll also touch on appreciations of the form from Fairy Tale Review editor Kate Bernheimer, exploring techniques such as flatness, everyday magic, and intuitive magic. In the last two classes, students will have the opportunity to workshop their own fairy tales.
