Creatures of the Sea: Experiments in Poetry and Marine Biology [Sierra Nelson]
What sensory approaches can we learn from an octopus, expanding our imagery? What makes words school like fish, or helps work grow one gigantic claw? This generative class provides eclectic prompts using both poetic and scientific sources for inspiration, including work by Elizabeth Bishop, Katherine Larson, Rachel Carson, W.S. Merwin, and Henry Beston. Most writing happens in class, culminating in a portfolio of at least 5 new pieces. Slanted towards poetry; all levels welcome; no previous marine knowledge required.
