Generative Revision: Beyond the Zero-Sum Game [Monica Youn]
Poets tend to treat revision as a process of renunciation. But is there another, kinder way? This workshop considers another, generative model of revision—one in which the original and revised poem can coexist, can inhabit alternative realities. We’ll work on revision as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and analyze poems by Emily Dickinson, Elizabeth Bishop, Ross Gay, CD Wright, Terrance Hayes, Anne Carson, and possibly others. Please bring up to four of your own poems.
