Language Renovation via the Lyric Essay [Cody Pherigo]
All Levels | Part genre theory, part playful reading, part generative writing, this class explores how creative nonfiction and poetry can blend to become a fantastic “Other.” We’ll deconstruct several genres, identify tools/styles to carry forward, and then map and manifest a new species of essay. Each student will workshop one essay and finish class with a well-polished piece. Readings will include abecedarian essays, braided essays, prose poems, hybrid poems, and letter exchanges. Expect to read work by Anne Carson, Roxanne Gay, Brenda Miller, Leslie Marmon Silko, James Wright, John Paul Brammer, and Hugo House teacher Corinne Manning.
