Memoir as Collage [Anne Liu Kellor]

We will explore memoirs that are told in a nonlinear, lyrical, fragmented fashion. Each week, we will read excerpts from writers such as Lidia Yuknavitch, Abigail Thomas, Nick Flynn, and Sarah Manguso, examining how they weave together their memories, themes, metaphors, and multiple point of views into a rich, complex whole. We will also explore the potential theme(s) and structures that exist in our own memoirs-in-progress by utilizing in-class freewriting, discussion, and a respectful workshopping process.
