Poetry and the Senses [Janie Miller]
This course will travel as far as your senses can take you. Through writing exercises, you will generate a new poem each week guided by your ears, nose, eyes, taste buds, and skin, as well as exploration of the mysterious sixth sense. Let the old air in a bicycle tire take you into the past. We will read poets such as Elizabeth Bishop, Wallace Stevens, Natasha Tretheway, Hayden Carruth, Theodore Roethke, and Jorie Graham, as well as essays by Marianne Boruch to inspire new work. Expect to leave the class with three to five new poems, fresh perspectives on your senses, and and a new understanding of the depth to which the study of poetry can shed light on existence.
