Endings and Beginnings: The Craft of Story

All Levels | Master storytellers know how to draw the reader in and how to inspire and astonish us with the ending. In this workshop, we will read a range of writers (Jhumpa Lahiri, Alice Munro, Karen Joy Fowler, Angela Carter, and more) whose work engages and invigorates, paying special attention to the beginnings and endings of their stories. We’ll discuss what defines a fulfilling ending, whether an ending can be a beginning of some kind, and if and how endings can be planned. Students can expect to come away with three new beginnings and an outline of a short story.

Beginning Fall 2021, we will be adding select in-person classes back to our course catalog. The majority of our classes will still be offered via Zoom.

If a class says IN-PERSON in its title, it will take place in person at our permanent home in Seattle.

If a class says ASYNCHRONOUS in its title, it will take place on Wet Ink, our asynchronous learning platform.

If a class does not have a marker after its title, it will take place via Zoom.
