"I hired Alma as a manuscript consultant and writing advisor after taking her amazing Hugo House course on creating scenes. Alma read my writing and met with me one-on-one to discuss the work, both of which were vital to improving my craft. Alma was not only an enthusiastic reader and editor, but she provided specific, actionable feedback based on my goals and the needs of the project. She remains my favorite writing instructor for her immense knowledge and her innate ability to diagnose a story's problem. I have a publication credit to Pleiades Magazine and a Pushcart nomination to thank her for." - Drew McCutchen, 2018 PEN/Dau Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers

My short fiction has won numerous awards and has appeared most recently in Kweli Journal, Bluestem, Duende, Enizagam, Narrative Magazine (past winner of Narrative Prize for Fiction), Passages North, Boulevard, and the anthology, Roadside Curiosities: Stories About American Pop Culture (University of Leipzig). I have also received grants from 4Culture and Artist Trust, as well as a fellowship from the Rona Jaffe Foundation. I recently completed a novel which is under consideration at several publishing houses. I have taught at Hugo House since 2007 and was a graduate assistant teacher (in both composition and fiction writing) at the University of Arizona, where I received my MFA in 1999. I also hold a degree in journalism and was a staff writer for the Santa Fe Reporter as well as editor-in-chief of the Weekly Alibi (a weekly newspaper in Albuquerque, NM). I now offer my services as a freelance editor, serving mostly as a developmental editor for full-length fiction and non-fiction manuscripts, though I do offer line-editing and copyediting services as well as ongoing, one-on-one mentoring sessions in fiction writing.
