About Hugo House

A literary home for all writers

Hugo House is a nonprofit literary arts organization that aims to open the literary world to everyone who loves books or has the drive to write.

Our mission is to celebrate the power of storytelling and nurture writers by providing a literary home to anyone passionate about stories. We help artists develop their craft, share their work, and sustain creative lives in community through inclusive literary programs, instruction, and events.

We envision a world where storytelling, in all its forms and from all voices, is deeply valued. A world where the act of writing is not just a solitary pursuit but a celebrated community journey. A place where writers, readers, and partner organizations come together to learn, develop their craft, and find fellowship.

"Home. Home. I knew it entering."

– Richard Hugo

Who We Are

Walk through our halls and you might find a teen grappling with the right ending for her first poem, an essayist workshopping a piece for a magazine, or a packed room of people eager to hear a best-selling writer read from her latest novel. You’re guaranteed to see staff and volunteers dedicated to readers, writers, and the written word.
